Background of the Study
This investigation explores gender disparities in health-seeking behavior in Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area, Abia State. Health-seeking behavior is influenced by a range of socio-cultural and economic factors that differ markedly between genders (Johnson, 2023). Women often face obstacles such as limited financial autonomy and restrictive cultural norms that delay or prevent timely access to healthcare services (Smith, 2024). Conversely, men might avoid seeking help due to perceptions of masculinity and stigma associated with vulnerability (Brown, 2025). These disparities result in differential health outcomes, contributing to broader public health challenges. The study examines factors influencing health-seeking behavior, including education, accessibility, and cultural perceptions. By integrating quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews, the research aims to identify barriers and propose interventions to promote equitable health access (Ade, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
Significant gender disparities exist in health-seeking behavior in Isiala Ngwa North, leading to unequal access to healthcare services. Cultural norms and economic barriers disproportionately affect women, while stigma deters men from seeking necessary care. These disparities result in adverse health outcomes and increased disease burdens. The study seeks to identify the underlying causes of these differences and recommend practical solutions to ensure that both genders can access timely and effective healthcare (Johnson, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To assess gender differences in health-seeking behavior.

  • To identify barriers affecting timely healthcare access.

  • To recommend strategies for equitable healthcare provision.

Research Questions:

  • What are the gender differences in health-seeking behavior?

  • What barriers impede access to healthcare for different genders?

  • What interventions can improve equitable health access?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H₁: Women experience more barriers to healthcare access than men.

  • H₂: Cultural norms significantly influence health-seeking behavior.

  • H₃: Interventions can reduce gender disparities in health access.

Significance of the Study
This investigation is significant as it identifies critical gender disparities in health-seeking behavior, offering evidence for tailored interventions that promote equitable healthcare. The study’s insights will guide policymakers and healthcare providers in improving access and outcomes for all individuals (Smith, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to exploring health-seeking behaviors in Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area, focusing on gender-specific influences. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported data and varying healthcare infrastructure across communities.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Health-Seeking Behavior: Actions undertaken by individuals to obtain healthcare services.

  • Barriers: Obstacles that impede access to healthcare.

  • Equitable Healthcare: Fair and just access to health services for all population groups.
